A few days ago, Dominik Schiener made a exciting reveal on a possible implementation of IOTA Identity at an AMA meeting. The IOTA Foundation co-founder stated that they are in talks with partners and government agencies in the United States to implement a vaccination passport solution.
Last week, public a document describing such a use case on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) website. Entitled "Using IOTA and QR Code Technology to Control Epidemic Diseases in the US," the research was presented at a conference held on January 30 as part of a series of workshops and presentations at an annual organized event. by the IEEE.
The IEEE is an institute of great importance for the adoption of new tools in the government sector. The institution is responsible for evaluating innovative projects or technologies that it can recommend for implementation in the United States government.
When conducting evaluations, the IEEE takes multiple criteria into consideration. For example, there must be an entity that is responsible for the sole development of that project, as is the case with the IOTA Foundation. In the past, the IEEE determined that Ethereum was not yet ready to be adopted by the US public sector.
How the IOTA-Based Solution Could Work
Presented by 4 researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the solution is called CoviReader. Its main objective is to combat the spread of COVID-19 and other future pandemics.
“CoviReader: a decentralized healthcare management system that shares user data anonymously. The system is based on the IOTA entanglement platform and provides users with detailed, immutable and easy access to their personal information. CoviReader handles authentication, confidentiality, transparency and data sharing (with crucial considerations when reviewing confidential information).
CoviReader would allow its users to interact with the database, called FIREBASE, through an application. As the document states, CoviReader will allow information to be shared among the government, health authorities, and the general public in IOTA Tangle's "transparent" ledger. The statement says:
“Every time users make their information accessible in the tangle, all kinds of data is collected, from administrative information to medical information, allowing doctors and medical staff to focus on what matters most (i.e. provide quality and effective patient care) and states to focus on how the situation is progressing ”.
User information will be anonymized after being verified and added to IOTA Tangle. The system will also implement a QR code for the issuance of personal identification cards. Thus, the newspaper states, "data identification" is no longer in the hands of a third party and streamlines the registration, monitoring, assistance and security processes for the authorities. The investigation concludes:
“IOTA Tangle, together with the MAM communication protocol, provides a free, stable and highly scalable data exchange between users. Finally, our model and proposed solution (CoviReader) offers a mechanism for the government and CDC in collaboration with state and local health departments, public health, healthcare providers, etc., to monitor the development of COVID-disease. 19 in the US ”.
