The new Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, presented his list of ministers on Friday. The new Government of Italy is made up of 23 ministers, 15 of them politicians versus 8 technicians. Despite the fact that the political weight is greater, the latter will take over some of the most important portfolios, such as the Economy, the Interior and Justice.
At the head of the Ministry of Economy is Daniele Franco, former director of the Bank of Italy. The Innovation and Digital Transition portfolio has fallen to Vittorio Colao, former CEO of Vodafone. The one who was the first woman to preside over the Constitutional Court, Marta Cartabia, is going to take charge of Justice.
The Foreign Affairs portfolio will continue to belong to Luigi Di Maio, leader of the 5 Star Movement. In addition, Giancarlo Giorgetti, a senior member of the League party, will be Minister of Industry. Andrea Orlando, from the center-left Democratic Party, will be Minister of Labor.
The former president of the ECB has been able to form a government thanks to the support of the 5 Star Movement (M5S), the party with the largest parliamentary presentation. The vote of the M5S bases reflected the internal division of the formation, since of the 74,537 voters, 44,177 expressed themselves in favor of supporting Draghi, 59.3% of the total, while 30,360 did so against (40, 7%).
The 25 ministers who are part of the Italian Government make it the largest in the European Union, above the Spanish, which has 23 portfolios.
