The Santande Bankr has raised a ERE that will affect 4,000 employees (14.78% of its total workforce) and intends to relocate 1,090, according to the Efe agency, citing sources close to the negotiation between both parties. Also, study close around 30% of its branch network in Spain, that is, between 900 and 1,000 offices.
To promote internal flexibility, the idea is relocate on a mandatory basis to workers in other group companies, but mainly in Santander Personal, the personalized customer service through remote channels. These people will be trained and their seniority and salary will be maintained.
It has also offered geographic mobility to be able to relocate the workforce affected by the volume of branch closures with the extension of the radius to 400 kilometers and with the possibility of transfers between islands in both archipelagos. In these cases, financial compensation of between 10% and 15%.
The unions have valued the internal flexibility measures very positively, but consider that 1,000 people are insufficient. In this sense, CCOO has committed to working to reduce the final number of extinctions, as well as to increase the number of employees who can benefit from relocations.
CLOSURE OF 30% OF ITS NETWORK OF BRANCHES IN SPAIN
Likewise, Banco Santander has raised with union representation the need to close around 30% of its network of branches in Spain, that is, between 900 and 1,000 branches. The entity has 3,110 offices distributed throughout the Spanish territory, according to the latest available data corresponding to the end of last September.
Banco Santander has justified this decision in the growing use that customers are making of digital channels, with the forecast that it will multiply both in transactionality and in sales in the next two or three years. Along these lines, Banco Santander would have recalled during the meeting with the unions that, despite the closure of part of the network, it has recently reached a agreement with Correos to provide basic financial services in more than 4,600 points of attention of the postal company. This alliance will allow it to expand its reach to 1,500 municipalities.
After the previous meetings, the entity and the unions have been summoned for next Tuesday, November 17, appointment in which the negotiating table will be constituted, the justifying report will be delivered and that will give way to the legal period of negotiations, which will last 30 days.
During the next meetings, several economic offers will be proposed, the impact by geographic areas and businesses, among other points. As is usual in this type of process, the final figures will vary depending on the negotiating work of both parties. The intention of the bank is to carry out a transformation and efficiency plan to adjust the dimension in Spain to the new realities. It will affect the commercial network, central services and the corporate center.
Just a year ago, the entity chaired by Ana Botín It ended the bulk of the ERE that it launched in May 2019 as a result of the duplications derived from the integration of Banco Popular and which led to the departure of 3,223 workers. This adjustment also implied the definitive closure of 1,128 branches.
