Telefónica has been the winner of the second public call of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation with 5G plans for Madrid, Andalusia, Extremadura and Castilla y La Mancha. The total budget between the four initiatives is 8 million euros, of which 2.8 million euros are co-financed by Red.es from the FEDER funds.
The Spanish multinational telecommunications company has become the sole operator whose projects have been selected in both calls. From now on, he will direct the Telefónica 5G Madrid and 5G Andalucía Private Networks proposals with 13 use cases, and will support 8 pilots in Extremadura and Castilla La Mancha with his 5G network.
Therefore, the new 5G pilots in these four Autonomous Communities join the 5G Galicia Pilot (2019-2021) to develop use cases in order to promote 5G technology in Spain, through co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and Telefónica's 5G network. The basis of construction of the proposals has been the experience gained in the more than 60 5G use cases, in which Telefónica has worked since the start of the 5G Technological Cities project in January 2018.
Within these projects innovative technologies will be used, as is the case of the application of holography, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and vehicular communications on drones as well as the most advanced models of smartphones, routers and virtual reality glasses.
Likewise, new capabilities are being incorporated into 5G such as edge computing (run the services as close as possible to the client), Stand Alone networks (only 5G networks) and network slicing (several virtual mobile networks in a single coverage), which will allow to grant distinctive benefits to these cases of use using all available radio frequencies for 5G.
