The Spanish Minister of Economy, Nadia Calviño, has not obtained the necessary supports to be elected President of the Eurogroup, an award that has been won by the Irish candidate, Pachal Donohoe. The Spanish had the backing of Italy, France, Germany and Greece, but they have not been enough. It should be remembered that this is a secret vote.
In the first vote, none of the three candidates has obtained the necessary support. This has caused the Luxembourg candidate, Pierre Gramegna, to withdraw from the race to preside over the Eurogroup after being the one with the fewest votes.
A first round in which Calviño was the most voted with nine supports in his favor compared to the five obtained by the other two candidates.
The Spanish was one of the great favorites In order to get the coveted position, in fact, it was the most voted in the first vote, with nine of the supports compared to the five obtained by the Irish and the Luxembourgish.
Since the creation of the organism, no Spanish has managed to preside over it. Jean-Claude Juncker (2004-2013), Dutch Jeroen Djisselbloem (2013-2015 and 2015-2018) and Portuguese Mario Centeno (2018-2020) have been in charge.
Calviño is not the first Spanish woman to try it. In 2015 he also tried to apply for the Luis de Guindos position, current Vice President of the European Central Bank.
The Spanish minister has used her Twitter account to congratulate the new president, whom she invites to work together "to guarantee a solid recovery that leaves no one behind."
Looking forward to working together to ensure a robust recovery that leaves no one behind.

Calviño wanted to thank all the support he has received in recent weeks from political forces and social partners. The minister has made a special mention to Pedro Sánchez, who thanks "your full involvement and support".
Donohoe himself has ensured that a line of joint work will be the one that marks his mandate. "I look forward to working with all my colleagues in the Eurogroup for years to come to guarantee a fair and inclusive recovery for all"He assured, like Calviño, through his Twitter account.
A recognition to Donohoe also wanted to add Pedro Sánchez. The Prime Minister has asked him to "work side by side" so that next week Europe can have a response to the height of the economic crisis that is being experienced.
He has also had words of thanks for Calviño, he has assured that "Europe needs the contribution and leadership" of people like her. "It is a pride to count on the Government with your tireless work to consolidate the economy and guarantee the future of the EU."
THE PP QUALIFIES IT AS "A FAILURE OF SÁNCHEZ"
The Popular Party has regretted that the third vice-president and minister for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, has not been elected president of the Eurogroup. "It is bad news for Spain" and "A failure" of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, have given their opinion from Genoa.
For Pablo Casado's party, it was "evident that Calviño's candidacy was born weakened by representing a government that is the result of a coalition with a radical and populist party like Podemos." In his opinion, the decision reflects “the weight loss of Spain in Brussels, which joins the three general directors that we have lost in the Commission since Sánchez is President of the Government ”.
