The International Olympic Committee (IOC) This Sunday has opened the door to the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
In recent weeks, the IOC had transmitted a message of calm and optimism and had maintained at all times that the Tokyo event was to be held on its original deadlines, between the July 24 and August 9. The IOC Executive has set a deadline of four weeks to close with Tokyo and the Japanese Government a new calendar.
The IOC has emphasized that canceling the Games "would not solve any of the problems or help anyone. Therefore, cancellation is not on the agenda"
The President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, had encouraged athletes to follow "preparing at full speed" for the most important sporting event of the year. However, the emergency situation and complaints from many sports and national groups has made the IOC reconsider.
