The German handball players have in the third game of the main round of the European Championship against Austria won. With a 34:22 (16:13) win over the co-hosts, the DHB selection secured the game for fifth place ahead of time. The best thrower of the German team in front of around 9,000 spectators was Timo Kastening with six goals.
Even before the game started, it was clear that Germany would no longer be able to enter the semi-finals. Defending champion Spain won his game against Belarus with a convincing 37:28. A victory for the Belarusians with seven or eight goals would have given Germany a chance to reach the semi-finals.
Especially goalkeeper Johannes Bitter performed well. Already six minutes after his substitution in the 15th minute, he fended off a seven-meter from Bundesliga professional Robert Weber. With his further parades, Bitter was the guarantor for numerous counterattacks. "He has a huge experience that he brought in immediately. That was important for the team," said DHB sports director Axel Kromer during the half-time break on ARD.
In the last main round game on Wednesday (8.30 p.m.) Germany meets the Czech Republic. The match for fifth place will take place on Saturday (4 p.m.) in Stockholm.
